Days 1 to 3

Two recoveries at once

You will feel the abdominal repair most in the lower back and the breast procedure most through the upper chest and shoulders. Sleeping is typically inclined, with knees elevated and arms supported on pillows. Drains from the abdomen are usually in place. Movement is slow, assisted, and deliberate.

Days 4 to 7

Drains out, mobility slowly back

Abdominal drains often come out between day 5 and day 10. Bruising through the chest and abdomen fades from purple to yellow-green. Lymphatic drainage can typically begin around day 5 to 7 with a technique tailored to avoid the breast closures. You are still bent at the waist and moving carefully.

Weeks 2 to 4

Posture, progress, and caution

Abdominal posture returns to upright gradually. Arm range of motion expands under surgeon guidance — usually no reaching overhead or lifting more than 5 to 10 pounds until cleared. Swelling in the lower abdomen and around the breasts is still prominent. Most desk-based work is manageable by week 3.

Months 2 to 6

Settling and refinement

Swelling in the abdomen can persist for up to 6 months and breasts continue to settle for 3 to 6 months. Scars mature over 12 to 18 months. Patients who stay consistent with scar care, compression, hydration, and a gradual exercise return see the cleanest, most balanced final result.
