A note on what this is

Post-op lymphatic drainage is not a spa service. It is clinical care, delivered quietly.

The first weeks after a BBL, tummy tuck, lipo 360, or mommy makeover are when fibrosis forms, when swelling decides whether to soften or stiffen, and when the shape of your result is written into tissue. Manual lymphatic drainage is the difference between a recovery that trails and a recovery that moves. Bodied in MIA brings that work to your door — procedure-aware, private, unhurried — so the room stays quiet and the healing stays on schedule.

Before we arrive

A quiet room. A few small preparations.

The therapist brings everything clinical. You only need to give us the room, a little water, and your garment close by.

  • A cleared space

About 8 by 10 feet of open floor — enough room for our portable table, a small cart, and the therapist to move around you comfortably.

  • Fresh linens & towels

A few clean towels and a top sheet. We bring our own table linens, but extra towels help with positioning and post-session drying.

  • Hydration on hand

A full glass or bottle of water nearby. Drainage sessions move a lot of fluid — what you drink after matters as much as the session itself.

  • Your surgical garment

Have your compression garment or faja within reach. Your therapist will help you back into it correctly before they leave.

The science of post-op drainage

The numbers your surgeon wants you to know.

Manual lymphatic drainage is not a spa massage. The protocol changes by procedure. The start window matters more than session count. Every figure below is sourced from peer-reviewed research, ASPS guidance, or Florida statute.

  • 24 hoursOptimal start window for first MLD session

Manual lymphatic drainage is most effective when initiated within the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, before serous fluid organizes into stable pockets the body cannot easily reabsorb.

Source: Mayo Clinic — Manual Lymph Drainage
  • 23.4%Reduction in post-op fibrosis with structured MLD + compression

Peer-reviewed research shows structured manual lymphatic drainage combined with compression garment protocols significantly reduces hard nodules and contour irregularities versus unstructured aftercare.

Source: NIH PMC — MLD and Post-Op Fibrosis
  • 5 to 50%Published seroma rate range after abdominoplasty

Patients on strict MLD, drain, and compression protocols sit at the low end of this range. The wide variance directly reflects how much aftercare execution matters.

Source: PubMed — Abdominoplasty Seroma Rates
  • 10 to 20Typical post-op drainage course

Many post-op patients need 10 to 20 lymphatic drainage sessions, adjusted by procedure, swelling, surgeon instructions, and recovery response.

Protocol by procedure.

  • BBL

    30-minute sessions
    • Start window24 to 48 hours post-op
    • CadenceEvery other day, weeks 1 to 2; twice weekly, weeks 3 to 6

Light pressure to avoid disrupting transferred fat. Side-lying or face-down positioning. Focus on flank, back, and abdominal donor sites where liposuction was performed. Direct buttock pressure is avoided to protect the new fat graft.

  • Tummy Tuck

    30-minute sessions
    • Start window24 to 72 hours post-op (surgeon-cleared)
    • CadenceEvery other day, weeks 1 to 2; weekly, weeks 3 to 6

Pressure routes serous fluid away from the surgical cavity to reduce seroma risk. Avoids direct compression on the abdominal flap during the bonding phase. Drain output and incision-line condition are reviewed before each session.

  • Lipo 360

    30-minute sessions
    • Start window24 to 48 hours post-op
    • CadenceDaily for the first 5 days; every other day through week 4

Multiple donor sites (abdomen, flanks, back) require coordinated drainage technique. Aggressive early protocol prevents fibrosis and hardening across all liposuctioned areas. Compression garment compliance is reviewed.

  • Mommy Makeover

    30 to 45-minute sessions
    • Start window48 to 72 hours post-op (surgeon-cleared)
    • CadenceEvery other day, weeks 1 to 2; twice weekly, weeks 3 to 8

Combined-procedure recovery requires the longest MLD protocol in our practice. Tummy tuck flap, breast augmentation drainage, and any liposuction sites are addressed sequentially. Most operationally complex protocol.
